Sinclair Knight Merz and Parsons Brinckerhoff have been selected to partner with the NSW Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) to undertake the detailed design work and obtain the necessary environmental approvals for the upgrade of the Great Western Highway between Mount Victoria and Lithgow.

The preferred route for the upgrade was identified after after two years of planning and consultations, and the design contract will refine the highway’s new alignment and determine the location of intersections and lane arrangements, as well as carry out more detailed geotechnical and environmental investigations.

This work is expected to be completed later this year, clearing the way for the staged upgrade of the road to begin shortly thereafter.

The RTA is also planning a 2.4km upgrade to the Great Western Highway at Kelso. The preferred design is under development and will be displayed later this year.
