Details have been released of the $150 million Calliope Crossroads Upgrade to improve safety at the Bruce Highway and Dawson Highway intersection, west of Gladstone.

The Calliope Crossroads design has been completed two months ahead of schedule, and will be displayed until 18 February 2012.

Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister Anthony Albanese said it will be the largest highway interchange in Queensland outside the south -east corner.

“The size of the upgrade reflects the growing importance of the Gladstone Region as an economic powerhouse in this state, and the future growth we expect in the area.

“In fact, such is its importance we brought forward $80 million from our Nation Building Program to fast track the project.”

Construction on the Calliope Crossroads Upgrade is expected to commence by June 2012 and will take up to two years to complete.

Key features include:

  • A 64 metre long bridge for the Bruce Highway, which when constructed will see the highway return to a 100km/h speed limit.
  • The Dawson Highway will pass under the new bridge, and will be upgraded to a four lane divided road in the intersection area.
  • On and off ramps for Dawson Highway traffic turning onto an off the Bruce Highway. Traffic lights at the off ramp intersections to improve the safety of turning traffic. Dedicated turn lanes into Ibottson Road and Domain Parklands.
  • Relocated private property accesses along the Bruce Highway.
  • A shared pedestrian/cyclist path provided beside the Dawson Highway.
