Space Systems Engineer

As the Space Systems Engineer with CSIRO Astronomy and Space Science (CASS), you will support the Space Technology Future Science Platform (Space FSP) in its aim to achieve impact through novel, multi?disciplinary and collaborative science and engineering.  Drawing on your space system design and engineering expertise, you will support the delivery of the Space FSP research program to build world-leading capability and drive cutting-edge research within CSIRO.  In this newly created position, you will play a key role in creating societal benefits and commercial opportunities and help transform the Australian space sector. A number of Space FSP projects will seek to achieve spaceflight readiness within two years and will be a key focus of your role.  The position has the potential to expand based on expected development of new projects and possible larger programs of work in the next few years.

You may also be called on to provide support on spacecraft design to the AquaWatch Australia Mission. CSIRO, in partnership with the SmartSat CRC and other organisations, is developing AquaWatch Australia as part of its emerging Missions portfolio, to establish an integrated ground-to-space national water quality monitoring system.

In this role you will:

  • Provide technical coordination and advice on space systems engineering and mission design and requirements.
  • Collaboratively deliver the strategic objectives of the Space FSP, particularly in relation to achieving spaceflight readiness for a number of technologies.
  • Apply specialist expertise to solve complex problems and provide technical advice on space system design to research projects.
  • Support the Project Leaders to de-risk and deliver on the technical goals of their projects.
  • Provide space systems engineering advice for the CSIROSat-1 CubeSat project.
  • Provide support to the Space FSP Leader, contributing high-level input on strategic program and business development.
  • Make critical decisions between the use of current technological developments or novel methodologies in relation to space systems engineering.
  • Build strong client relationship and act as primary technical interface between internal and external partners.
  • Assist in selection and establishment of new space projects in consultation with clients or CSIRO project teams

Salary: AU$113k - AU$132k per annum (pro-rata for part-time), plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will hold a minimum of bachelor-level qualifications in a relevant engineering or applied physics discipline, and have at least 5–10 years’ experience in spacecraft engineering. 

You will also have:

  • A technical understanding of key spacecraft subsystems and their associated components, including demonstrated expertise in at least one of the following: attitude determination and control, spacecraft electrical power systems, space-ground communications, on-orbit command and data handling, and thermal control. 
  • Proven technical understanding of the space environment, orbital mechanics, and rigid body dynamics.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of relevant NASA, ESA or other international space system design standards, requirements and implementation processes.
  • The capability to apply the Systems Engineering approach to the development of space technology/missions.
  • Excellent interpersonal abilities, including high quality written and oral communication skills and a strong history of working effectively in teams.
  • The ability and willingness to travel approximately two-monthly, within Australia (consistent with local travel restrictions).

  • be required to obtain and provide a National Police Clearance or equivalent.
  • be willing and eligible to obtain, if required, a security clearance at the Secret (NV1) level.
