Techno-social Economic Lead

The Opportunity
  • Work across a range of key energy research projects
  • Use your excellent communication skills to influence stakeholders
  • Join CSIRO in this new role & be a part of changing Australia's Energy future

CSIRO Energy is playing a key role in Australia’s energy transition. With work spanning from energy efficiency in buildings to the operation of electricity systems, we work across a large range of industries and application domains. Our research includes establishing costs of different technology pathways and modelling different future scenarios - this is often a contentious area and as the Techno-social Economic Lead, you will drive stakeholder discussions and communicate this research.

Your time will primarily be dedicated to communicating the Energy business unit’s (BU) research, listening to stakeholders and connecting the BU to stakeholders interested in more deeply engaging. You will have two important outputs: improving the quality of our communication activities by employing their natural inclination towards outreach; and broadening the audience for CSIRO’s research by focussing their efforts on connecting with different audiences.

We are looking for someone with the intellectual capability to understand our social and economic research and its connections to our more traditional science activities.  You will need to have good judgement in being able to communicate contentious issues in a contested space, balancing considerations of the scientific objectivity, the inherent uncertainties in the energy transition and empathy for the audience and their concerns.

Your duties will include:
  • Taking into account social and economic factors and Government policy, analysing internal capabilities and use knowledge of the market to build on opportunities for ongoing work and generate new business.
  • Developing and maintaining business relationships with clients to ensure that research is aligned with client and business unit needs.
  • Representing the CSIRO's interests in external forums and negotiate with other organisations to develop collaborative projects.
  • Undertaking media interviews on contentious issues when required.

Location: Newcastle, NSW preferred. Other locations may be considered.
Salary: AU$136k - AU$150k plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure: Specified term of 3 years
Reference: 68081

To be considered you will need:
  • A doctorate or equivalent experience in economic, social or physical sciences.
  • A background in research, engineering, communication or other relevant field.
  • Energy sector domain knowledge such as a general understanding of energy sources, technologies and common units and terms.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, evidenced by high-level reporting, presentation and negotiation abilities, and the capacity to identify and influence critical stakeholders to gain support for complex proposals/ideas.
  • The capacity to choose appropriate management strategies and communication styles to maintain high levels of motivation and productivity, giving feedback for development purposes and providing support for improvement.
